How we look after your details

Last updated 30 October 2026

We collect only what we need to draw and deliver your book. We don't sell your data, show ads or track you around the web.

Who's responsible

Crayon & Collar is run by Feather Labs, a UK sole-trader business. To get in touch, email josh@featherlabs.uk. A real person reads every message.

We decide how your personal data is used, which makes us its controller under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018).

What we collect

  • Your email address, to send you your preview and your book.
  • Your pet's photos (1 to 4). We remove location and camera details from them when you upload. Photos with people in them are refused.
  • What you type in: your pet's name and what they love, a child's first name, age range and interests, and a dedication.
  • For printed books: the delivery name, address and phone number you give at checkout.
  • Payment: our payment provider handles your card. We never see your card number; we only learn what was paid.
  • Your IP address, so we can limit free previews and stop abuse.

Why we use it

  • To make and deliver your book, including the free preview, and to email you about it. The law calls this performing a contract, or taking steps you asked for before one.
  • To take payment and keep tax records, for the contract and because the law requires it.
  • To keep the site safe and affordable: limits per IP address, and checks that photos show pets and words are kind. This is our legitimate interest.

We only email you about your order. We don't send marketing emails. Automated checks can refuse a photo or a word; if you think one got it wrong, tell us and a person will look.

Who we share it with

A few companies help us run Crayon & Collar. Each one only gets what it needs, and only uses it to do the job for us:

  • AI image and text services get your pet's photos and what you typed, to check them and draw your pages. They don't use them to train their models. One of them may process data in the USA.
  • Our payment provider takes your payment and gets your email, card details and, for printed books, your delivery address and phone number. It's also responsible for some of this itself, for example to prevent fraud.
  • Our email delivery service sends our emails, so it gets your email address and the emails themselves (your pet's name and links to your book).
  • Our hosting provider runs the site and stores your photos, your book and our records on servers in London.
  • Our print partner gets the book's pages and your delivery name, address and phone number, to print and post a printed book.

When any of these companies processes your data outside the UK, it's protected by safeguards UK law approves, such as the UK–US data bridge or the UK's standard data transfer clauses. We never sell your data or share it with advertisers.

How long we keep it

  • Photos you choose but don't use are deleted after 24 hours.
  • Your pet's photos, and the crops we make from them, are deleted 30 days after you start a book, whether you buy it or not.
  • Previews you don't buy are deleted after 30 days.
  • Finished books are kept so you can download yours again. Ask and we'll delete it.
  • Order records (your email, what you bought, what you paid and any delivery address) are kept for six years, because tax law requires it. The details you typed and your IP address stay with your book's record; ask and we'll delete them.

Your rights

You can ask to see the data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, limit how we use it, object to how we use it, or get a copy to take elsewhere. To do any of these, email josh@featherlabs.uk. It's free, and we'll reply within a month.

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, please tell us first. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.

Cookies

We don't use analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, and there are no tracking scripts on the site. We only use an essential cookie, to remember your site access and preferences.

While you make a book, your browser keeps your answers and chosen photos in session storage, so a refresh doesn't lose them. It's cleared when you close the tab. At checkout, our payment provider sets its own cookies, to take payment and prevent fraud.

Children

Crayon & Collar is for adults buying for children. We never take photos of children: our checks refuse them. If you give us a child's first name, age range and interests, we use them only to make the book.

Changes

If we change this notice, we'll update the date at the top. Our terms cover your order itself.
